President's Note

Dear Donors, Alumni and Friends,

Greetings from the Indiana State University Foundation! In my second year as president of the Foundation, I am continually amazed by the alumni and friends that I have the privilege of meeting who share my passion and excitement for being a Sycamore. I have found this is especially true of those who generously contribute to the institution. Philanthropy makes a powerful statement, especially for our students. Thank you for your support of Indiana State!

Your devotion to the growth and success of our University is truly inspiring to the entire campus community. This past year’s philanthropy helped to provide for our most critical needs and enabled us to achieve our goals. Contributing to this success included our largest fundraising event in University history. The Honoring a Legend – Larry Bird Scholarship Dinner and Statue Dedication raised more than $400,000 to establish a scholarship endowment in Larry’s honor. This was truly an impressive weekend, which received bronze recognition through the CASE International Awards program. It will have a lasting impact as the endowment will benefit men’s and women’s basketball players.

Most notably, we awarded more than $1.2 million in donor funded student scholarships for the 2014-15 academic year. This is nearly double the amount available for the 2013-14 year and is a testament to the action we've taken to strengthen our endowment management and stewardship practices.

We have a great staff and resilient board in place and I credit them for our progress. Despite our challenges, we ended the 2014 fiscal year with a surplus budget. We have had great success with our Alumni Association initiatives shown through increased attendance at our alumni events and a revival of the dues paying alumni membership program through the new Blue Card Club. These efforts contribute to increased alumni engagement and demonstrate pride in our alma mater.

As we look forward, we are committed to being the transformational source of philanthropy for our University. To keep us focused on this goal we will launch the ISU Foundation’s new strategic plan, which encompasses the next five years. This plan is centered on goals that help to advance Indiana State’s short-term needs and visionary priorities. One way you can make an immediate impact is to participate in The Fund for Indiana State annual campaign. This campaign goal of $550,000 provides needed annual support that our greatest priorities, possibilities and potential.

It also focuses on our relationships with donors, alumni, and the community. This will be evident as we partner with our campus colleagues to prepare for Indiana State’s sesquicentennial anniversary. Set to launch in October 2015, this will truly be a celebration not only of our heritage, but also of our next 150 years. More information will be coming about special anniversary events and initiatives.

Also, next time you are on campus or plan to visit campus, make sure to stop by our office, located at 30 North Fifth Street. As the official Alumni Welcome Center, we encourage you to come see our new alumni lounge, browse a century’s worth of yearbooks and enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee.
